The fourth locally-funded concrete bridge, connecting Candau-ay and Balugo, is now officially open for public use after its inauguration March 27 in Dumaguete City, led by Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo.

Remollo said this bridge replaces the old spillway and guarantees that motorists and residents can now safely pass through this part of the Banica River even during bad weather or a surge of flood waters.

The project also aims to minimize traffic congestion, the city said.

Residents and barangay officials thanked the city government for the completion of the concrete bridge, as well as the closure of the dumpsite in March 2021, concreting of access road, and advocating for the construction of the river control dikes.

Remollo, meanwhile, thanked all taxpayers for making this project a success, and for their continued trust in the government.

Rev. Fr. Fidel Tinaya officiated in the blessing of the newly-completed bridge.

Other bridges completed during the administration of Remollo included one at the back of Foundation University in Colon, another near the BIR linking barangays Batinguel and Bagacay, and the Batinguel-Junob bridge.

The proposed fifth concrete bridge connecting Poblacion 8 and Tabuc-tubig, near the barangay hall and across Banica River, with an estimated budget of P30 million, still awaits approval from the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

The construction of concrete bridges and the Banica River Control project, implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways and LGU Dumaguete, aim to make communities resilient to the ill-effects of climate change, the city said ||
