The Philippine Science High School (PSHS) System Board of Trustees has officially approved that the PSHS-Negros Island Region campus will be constructed in a 10-hectare property in Barangay Granada, Bacolod City.
“This will be the biggest campus, so far—bigger than our seven-hectare main campus in Quezon City—and we want to start things right,” Ronnalee Orteza, executive director of the PSHS System, said in her meeting with Mayor Greg Gasataya and other officials Aug. 5 at the Bacolod Government Center.
“This will complete our 17 campuses all over the country, based on the law,” added Orteza, who presented a copy of the PSHS Board Resolution to Gasataya.
The mayor welcomed this development and assured PSHS officials of the city government’s full support in the establishment and operation of the new campus, with the groundbreaking targeted this.
The nearly 10-hectare regional campus, scheduled to begin operations in July 2027, will accommodate up to 720 students, the city said. “For school year 2027-2028, the Bacolod campus is expected to admit its first batch of 120 Grade 7 students.”
Department of Science and Technology and PSHS officials will conduct school-to-school information campaigns in public and private schools across the NIR toward the end of 2026 to encourage qualified Grade 6 pupils to apply for the Philippine Science High School National Competitive Examination on Jan. 30, 2027.
Successful applicants will receive full government scholarships, covering free tuition and other school fees, textbooks, monthly stipends, and other educational benefits.
The new campus is expected to provide academically-gifted students from Bacolod City and the NIR with greater access to quality education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Gasataya said the project will further strengthen Bacolod’s position as an emerging hub for education, research, and innovation while preparing young Bacolodnons to become future scientists, engineers, innovators, and national leaders. ||
