Bacolod City Lone District Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez is calling for a congressional inquiry into measures aimed at making electricity more affordable for Filipino consumers, emphasizing that lower power costs would benefit both households and businesses.

Benitez said reducing electricity expenses would allow families to allocate more of their income to essential daily needs while improving the competitiveness of the country’s micro, small, and medium enterprises.

As an example of a practical solution, Benitez highlighted the growing adoption of rooftop solar systems within the franchise area of Negros Electric and Power Corporation (Negros Power).

He noted that 1,471 households in the Negros Power coverage area have already installed rooftop solar systems, enabling many consumers to reduce their electricity bills by 40 to 50 percent.

Some households have reportedly achieved savings of up to 100 percent on their monthly electricity costs.

In a statement, Benitez said the increasing use of renewable energy at the household level demonstrates how clean energy investments can provide immediate financial relief while contributing to long-term energy security.

The lawmaker expressed hope that more communities across the country would adopt rooftop solar technology, saying wider participation would help build a more sustainable, resilient, and energy-secure future for Filipinos.

“This is one of the goals I am determined to achieve,” Benitez said, reaffirming his commitment to advancing policies that promote affordable electricity and greater use of renewable energy. | GPB
