In a vibrant display of youth empowerment, Mayor Greg Gasataya led the oath-taking ceremony Nov. 17 of student-leaders joining the Boys and Girls Week 2025, which is a collaborative initiative between the Rotary Club of Bacolod and the city government.

Humphrey Miles Bayot of Sum-ag National High School Junior was sworn in as junior city mayor and Manny Nepomuceno of Bacolod City National High School as vice mayor. Their elections Nov. 10 marked the beginning of a week-long immersion into local governance, together with other young leaders.

From a pool of 130 students representing both public and private schools across the city, the Rotary Club of Bacolod meticulously selected outstanding youth leaders through a rigorous process of examinations, interviews, and elections. These young officials are tasked with formulating recommendations, policy proposals, and youth-centered projects that address the needs and aspirations of Bacolod’s younger population.

Bayot, meanwhile, shared his vision with passion during the oath-taking ceremony. “We are looking forward to crafting projects and resolutions that will truly impact the people of Bacolod. Our main focus is to provide a platform for the youth where they can voice their ideas.”

“I have long dreamed of becoming an official for Boys and Girls Week, and now I can see the impact it has on my life. I have motivated my fellow youth that no matter your age, you can do something for the community,” he said in a city press release.

The Boys and Girls Week SP members include Miguel Alfonso Jison, Ma. Agatha Agulan, Nina Marie Leonoras, and Hatasha Bernadas, all from St. John’s Institute; Kian Green Alvaran – Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, Charlene Ann Lim and Beatrice Neriel Garinganao of Bacolod Tay Tung High School, Daniela Marie Superal and Ethan Kyle Bolocon of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, Roseller Matthew Dilag of the University of St La Salle, Micah Therese Buenaflor – St. Scholastica’s Academy, and Jhon Nicole Detablan of USLS-Liceo Senior High School.

Gasataya expressed his enthusiasm and support for the youth leaders. “We are all excited for this one week with all of you. By Friday afternoon, you will submit your reports, observations, recommendations, and resolutions to the Sangguniang Panlungsod.”

It is our honor to host this program. We will take care of everything because we also want to listen to your observations and suggestions. Let this experience guide you in the months and years ahead,” the mayor told the youth leaders.

The immersion will continue until Friday and will culminate with the presentation of reports, observations, and resolutions to the Bacolod city government, marking a significant step in youth participation in local governance. ||
