Bacolod, NegOcc with highest number of new dengue cases

Bacolod City and Negros Occidental are in the list of areas in Western Visayas with high number of newly-reported dengue cases, as of the May 5-11 monitoring, the Department of Health in the region said.

Bacolod logged 34 new dengue infections, for a total of 123 cases since the start of this year, while Negros Occidental has 24 new cases (398 total), with two deaths.

The list was topped by the province of Iloilo, with 63 new cases (880 total) and three deaths, the DOH-WV CHD Regional Vector-borne Diseases Program said in a post May 17.

It added that there were 210 newly-reported dengue cases in Western Visayas, bringing the total to 2,837, or 18 percent higher compared to the 2,411 cases in the same period last year.

A 61-year-old female from Negros Occidental died of dengue, as of May 11, bringing the total regional dengue death count to six, with Aklan the other province with a lone fatality, the DOH said.

It added that 22 barangays in Western Visayas have clustering of cases, with increased attack rate noted in the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, and Guimaras. | CGC
