A Philippine Army soldier was slightly injured during a skirmish with remnants of the New People’s Army (NPA) at Barangay Humay-Humay in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental on Thursday (May 1).
Lt. Col. Evelio Ilanga III, commanding officer of the 62nd Infantry Battalion (IB), said patrolling troops encountered about nine fighters of the dismantled Central Negros 1 guerrilla unit.
Ilanga said the fleeing rebels fired at pursuing soldiers, using an M203 grenade launcher, causing slight injury to a soldier.
The rebels left behind an M16 assault rifle, personal belongings and subversive documents, which were recovered by 62IB soldiers.
The encounter took place after the clash in Barangay Tapi, Kabankalan City on April 27, resulting in the death of seven NPA remnants in Negros Occidental.
Pursuit operations against the fleeing rebels are ongoing. | GB
