Four of eight newly-installed artificial intelligence (AI)-powered traffic signals are now operational across key intersections in Bacolod City, Mayor Greg Gasataya said Sept. 28.
These traffic lights are at the intersections of BS Aquino Street and Lacson Street, Rizal Street and Lacson Street, Hernaez Street and Lacson Street, and Araneta Street and Lizares Street.
Configuration is ongoing for the units to be installed at Burgos Street and Lopez Jaena Street, as well as Araneta Street and Hernaez Street, the city added.
Electrical wiring and configuration are also underway at Burgos-Lacson Street, while ground excavation is being conducted to install signal posts at the intersection of Burgos Street and Carlos Hilado Highway.
Gasataya said the smart signals use integrated radar sensors and cameras to monitor vehicle volume in real time.
The system automatically adjusts the duration of the green light signal, based on traffic density in a particular direction.
“When traffic gets heavy because of the MassKara Festival, we will be able to observe the efficiency of this new traffic system,” the mayor said, noting that additional installations are also a possibility for other city intersections.
Gasataya also directed the City Engineer’s Office and the Bacolod Traffic and Transport Management Department to study the potential rehabilitation of older existing traffic lights to lessen expense on hardware materials. | TMD
