About 33,705 Negros Island Region (NIR) residents have registered to participate in the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE).
As of 7 p.m. of Aug. 4, Commission on Elections (Comelec) records showed 20,806 applicants in Negros Occidental, 12,551 in Negros Oriental, and 953 in Siquijor.
The Comelec mounted a “register anywhere, anytime” program to enable more people, especially those who are working, to file their applications and be able to vote.
A nationwide 10-day registration campaign is being held from July 31 to Aug. 10.
Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said they would continue preparing for the polls even with the recent moves to postpone the BSKE to next year.
He added that if the BSKE won’t push through in December this year, the Comelec would resume the nationwide voter registration in October. | GB
