(Last of two parts)
My ordeal didn’t end in 21 days but continued for a few more months lying on my bed the whole day. I celebrated my 53rd birthday, thanks to friends from the Association of Math and Science Educators of Philippine Public and Private Schools (ASMEPPS) who, despite my diabetes, brought a cake. I tasted the icing but had to forgo indulging my sweet tooth. After all, isn’t it the culprit why I am in this state?
I fondly recall enjoying desserts after meals throughout my travels in the Philippines. The inventors of these sweets could be accused of culinary “murder” for their irresistible creations, which have become staples like Coke in local diets.
During my recovery, I faced muscle atrophy in my legs due to prolonged immobility post-surgery, compounded by edema that lingered for months. A therapist visited three times a week, guiding me until I could stand and eventually walk with assistance from a walker and cane.
In February, I began therapy at Fadisab Rehab Center, owned by Dr. Fadi Saleem Al-Zard, a friend of Osmund. I had met Dr. Fadi during his visits to our home for football games with Osmund and their friends. Originally from Saudi Arabia, he settled in the Philippines to study and now operates three therapy centers in Bacoor and Las Piñas, attracting patients from Manila and nearby areas.
Initially attending therapy twice a week with Osmund or China, I made significant progress. By April, I traveled to Bohol and later to Antique in June, although I needed a wheelchair. The clinic’s aggressive rehabilitation approach helped restore my strength, enabling me to drive by August. An EMG in May revealed partial denervation of my muscles and sural neuropathy, prompting adjustments to my therapy activities for better outcomes.
As of today, I have already taken domestic and international flights and drives, including a trip to La Union to attend a Lions affair. The 6-hour drive was alternated with Dr. Nes Sauco, our colleague from Lions, who floored the gas to 140 km/hr. I only did 100 as I don’t have the same guts as hers and still wanted to enjoy the newfound blessing of recovery from that tragic November 2023 hospitalization.
I have successfully regained normalcy in my life following hospitalization. This December, I attended the Immaculate Conception Academy’s Christmas Party with my wife, China. We served as judges for performances by faculty and staff from four branches, alongside Prof. Eloisa Olivera. At the presidential table, we were honored to be joined by Directress Celia Rasing and Mr. Victor Campos, the founder’s grandson. This event marked a joyful return to community engagement and celebration after my recovery.
While some may wish for an escape from life’s challenges, I find myself embracing every moment with gratitude. For me, life couldn’t be any better. Each day brings new opportunities and experiences that enrich my journey, and I cherish the resilience that has shaped my perspective. ||
