The Sangguniang Panlungsod has declared Aug. 25-31 as Soroptimist Week in the highly-urbanized city, and called on city offices and Bacolodnons to promote and support relevant activities.

Soroptimist International of Bacolod will be celebrating the Soroptimist Week from Aug. 25-31 with various activities, such as the anti-Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) advocacy campaign, adopt-a-barangay project, livelihood training for women in the barangays, and improving an adopted Child Development Center, the resolution, authored by councilors Em Ang and Cindy Rojas, and approved by the SP Aug. 14, states.

“Soroptimist Week is celebrated in Bacolod with various activities that give focus to the improvement of the lives of women and girls, help women achieve economic and political equality, and provide outstanding leadership and development opportunities for women in local communities in the City of Bacolod,” the resolution said.

The SP said the protection of women is given utmost importance by the state programs and projects that promote awareness of the rights and privileges of women.

“A diverse group of like-minded women, known as the Soroptimist Organization, worked together using their expertise, business and professional skills and talents to support community-based and international projects that benefit women and girls,” hence the call to support these activities.

The SP also noted that Soroptimist International of Bacolod has partnered with the city government in some of its projects, particularly in the construction of the two buildings of Balay Pasilungan, a shelter for abused women and girls. | CGC
