Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo said that civil works have started for the first traffic lights system at the junction of E-Rovira to Leopoldo Rovira East Drive in Barangay Bantayan.

This is funded by the Department of Transportation, through the LTO Traffic Management Mentorship Program (TMMAP) Component B Traffic Signalization and Installation of Systems.

The project involves the installation of four traffic signal controllers and signal heads, pedestrian light, traffic control panel, and vehicle detection cameras that can detect both stationary and moving vehicles, the city said.

Councilor Karissa Tolentino-Maxino said that the budget for the locally-funded Smart CCTV and Traffic Light Management System Project for the 20 other pre-identified intersections across Dumaguete City has also been submitted to the Sangguniang Panlungsod and is expected to be deliberated in the next SP session.

Another traffic lights system, funded by the national government, will be installed at the intersection of Silliman Avenue and National Highway, near the Philippine National Bank, and is expected to begin in the coming months.

Remollo said the city’s traffic lights system in 22 pre-identified intersections aims to adopt a demand-based traffic operation to improve efficiency, utilizing a smart traffic signal controller that can analyze real-time traffic data from the signal inputs of strategically-installed traffic camera sensors.

This is in line with efforts to make the city livable, as the Remollo administration is determined to implement the smart CCTV and Traffic Light Management System Project to improve the efficiency of traffic flow and promote public safety in areas of Dumaguete that is becoming a thriving hub for economic activities and gateway of Negros Oriental, the city said. ||
