The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 28 more ash emissions or ashing events at Mt. Kanlaon in Negros Island.

In an advisory issued on Friday, Nov. 29, Phivolcs said the ash eruptions lasted five to 10 minutes, adding that it also logged 21 volcanic quakes in the past 24 hours.

Phivolcs defines volcanic earthquakes as those “generated by magmatic processes or magma-related processes beneath or near an active volcano.”

It warned that increased ash discharge may lead to “eruptive unrest”.

Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) prevails over Mt. Kanlaon after its explosive eruption last June 3.

The recent inspection conducted by personnel of Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park of the waterfalls in Sitio Guintubdan, Barangay Ara-al, La Carlota City, Negros Occidental indicated that the water had taken on a brownish hue, likely due to sediment runoff, triggered by recent rainfall in the area.

Phivolcs also reported that the volcano released 4,896 tons of sulfur dioxide flux on Nov. 28.

Entry into the volcano’s four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone and flying any aircraft close to it are prohibited. | GB
