Here are more random thoughts shared by multi-awarded journalist, Inday Espina-Varona, a Bacoleña, during the World Press Freedom Day forum held last week in Iloilo City.

The forum was sponsored by the Graciano Lopez Jaena Foundation.

* Journalists today can relate to the oppression that Lopez Jaena, Marcelo del Pilar and Dr. Jose Rizal Rizal faced. They also understand the why’s of oppression and attacks on press freedom.

Press freedom is high on the bill of rights, together with freedom of expression, freedom to organize and to assembly, because there are the rights that, when exercised well, best ensure that all other rights are respected by states.

In conversations with some of my colleagues recently about what appears to be a significant increase in email scams, someone said that they thought the isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic was to blame. That might or might not be the case, and maybe someone will do a study to prove or disprove it, but anecdotally I did notice an increase in the enticements landing in my email inbox since the beginning of 2021.
