A man and his father died while two others were injured in a shooting incident perpetrated by a member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) in Barangay Montilla, Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental on Jan. 2.
The suspect, Donan Sosia, 32, invoked self-defense as he was responding to a commotion.
Killed were John Albert Templatura, 32, and his father, Godofredo, 70, both laborers, while injured were Marites Rafol, 49, and Jeisel Abaño, 34, all residents of the same village.
Montilla barangay chairperson Nenita Alconera sought the help of the nearest Philippine Army detachment, following a commotion that ensued between John Albert and his brother-in-law, Alvin Abaño.
Sosia responded and tried to pacify John Albert, who was armed with a bolo, according to initial police investigation.
The CAFGU member, who is detained at the Moises Padilla Municipal Police Station jail, said he was forced to shoot John Albert to defend of himself when the victim attempted to assault him.
When Godofredo tried to get in between his son and Sosia, the latter also shot him.
Jeisel, wife of Abaño, and Rafol were hit by stray bullets on the leg.
Sosia was later arrested by the police at their detachment, where the M16 assault rifle he used was also recovered.
P/Maj. Jovito Bose, Moises Padilla police chief, yesterday said they are filing two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder charges against Sosia.
The two injured victims are now being treated at a hospital in Bacolod City. | GB
