Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island continued to generate grayish ash emissions for a second straight day on Sunday, Aug. 23 with plumes rising up to 300 meters above its summit crater, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The Phivolcs-Kanlaon Volcano Observatory confirmed multiple ash-emission events from Saturday until Sunday afternoon as the volcano remained under Alert Level 2, indicating increased unrest.
Phivolcs logged three ash emission events on Saturday and another the next day.
Sulfur dioxide emissions measured on Saturday reached 2,968 tons per day, indicating continued volcanic degassing.
The latest episode generated a grayish plume that rose about 150 meters above the summit crater and drifted southeast.
Phivolcs reiterated that entry into the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone remains strictly prohibited due to the possibility of sudden explosive eruptions or other volcanic hazards.
The agency also advised aircrafts to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash emissions and sudden volcanic activity may pose a danger to aviation. | GPB
