The Federation of the Urban Poor in Bacolod said that the 1986 EDSA People Power was a historical event in the Philippine worth a yearly commemoration.
As such, more than a hundred members of Fed UP marched from Goldenfield Commercial Complex and assembled in front of the monument of former senator Benigno Aquino Jr. at the old Bacolod airport this morning, Feb. 25. They held a short ceremony and remembered the events of the EDSA People Power 1.
They wore yellow shirts and waved their flaglets at commuters to remind them of the importance of the day’s celebration.
Joy Jarabelo of Fed UP said “no one was paid, pressured, or threatened to go to EDSA in 1986 to finally unite with others and protest” against the Marcos administration.
“The 36th year of celebration is our continuing statement for the young ones, the youth, so that they will know and appreciate the sacrifices of those at the EDSA People Power,” she added.
The group called on the people to choose good leaders, since this begets good government. They dispelled notions that the situation in the country would be the same whoever would be the next leaders.
“There are really honest people who, if given the power and resources, will not steal. Those who are not honest will find ways to steal and take advantage for their vested interest,” Jarabelo said.
“Voting for good leaders will be rebuilding the country that is now in the abyss of divisions, fighting, untruthfulness, corruption, poverty, skyrocketing prices of commodities, job loss, and misgovernance!
“The message of today’s celebration is the Filipino people have power come May 9 to rebuild the country towards development,” the group added.
The group also sang “Magkaisa” and laid their flaglets and flowers at the monument./MML
