An alcohol-fueled quarrel over cigarettes left a farmer dead and his neighbor on hospital arrest after they attacked each other with bladed weapons in a store in Barangay Abu-abo, Murcia, Negros Occidental Aug. 9.
Initial investigation by the Murcia Municipal Police Station showed that alias “Eduardo”, 71, of Hda. Sta. Angela in the barangay, went to the store of “Roberto”, 69, to buy cigarettes.
When Roberto informed him that they were out of stock, Eduardo insisted, which led to a heated argument between the two intoxicated farmers.
The verbal exchange quickly escalated into physical violence as Roberto armed himself with a bladed weapon, while Eduardo brandished a bolo.
Both men attacked each other, and Roberto sustained stab wounds in his abdomen while Eduardo suffered multiple hack wounds.
Roberto was rushed to the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival, the police said.
Responding policemen arrested Eduardo at the scene, and transported him to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City, where he remains admitted under hospital arrest.
Police recovered one unsheathed bolo at the crime scene.
